When the muscle car craze took off in the late 1960s, there seemed to be a market that could be served by cheaper models. Plymouth responded with the 1968 Road Runner, which had all the strengths of a muscle car but none of the fancy extras found on relatively expensive performance cars. The lack of frills helped keep the Road Runner's price down, which was exactly what many buyers were looking for. The redesigned 1970 Road Runner was part of Plymouth's new "Rapid Transit System" family of high performance vehicles. Whimsical new features included optional "Dust Trail" side stripes and a wild collection of attention-grabbing "High Impact" paint colors.
